Artist Statement
I paint images and lessons learned through Shamanic practice. These paintings show the dynamic quality of my experience in relationship with animal spirits and spirit teachers who fill themselves up with the brightest color even while I am painting them, telling my story of what it means to be a human being.
The vivid watercolor and translucent washes express the joy and myster inherent in traveling to the outer reaches of my imagination. Such compelling qualities are found in the folk art of Mexico, Aborigine art, Mayan and Native American art, their tools and hieroglyphs, as well as the magical masks and sculptures of the African Continent. All of which have informed the way in which I portray my inner world.
In my paintings you will note a complex language of spirals, swirls, circles, triangles, zig-zags and arrows. These are my personal markings signifying an underlying spiritual element in my work. They speak of the unifying nature of all things, as well as the constant shifts of duality in darkness and light, feminine and masculine, above and below. All vital creative aspects of the dance of life, bringing us together in community, keeping us whole as human beings.
